The crash involved a blue VW Polo and a Scania HGV car transporter, however a van was seen entering the northbound A1 just moments before.

West Yorkshire Police believe the driver of a black van (which is thought to be a Ford Transit) may have witnessed the crash or events leading up to it and is appealing for the driver, any passengers, or anyone who can help identify the vehicle to come forward.

They added that the driver of the VW Polo, a woman in her teens, remains in hospital in a serious condition.

PC Rob Wadsworth of the Roads Policing Unit said: "We believe this is a black Ford Transit van which has some distinctive black and possibly orange trim on its back doors and possibly on the rest of the body.

"I want to make it clear that the van's occupants are being treated as potential witnesses to this collision and may have vital information that could assist us in piecing together exactly what happened."

Anyone with information is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police by calling 101 or using the Live Chat service on the force’s website, quoting log 0858 of September 21.
