A North Yorkshire supermarket has become the first UK store to hit £50,000 fundraising milestone for a national charity.

Malton Morrisons is celebrating becoming the first Morrisons store in Britain to raise the funds for Marie Curie, one of the UK’s leading end of life charity.

The incredible feat was achieved less than two years into Morrisons national charity partnership with Marie Curie, which launched in November 2024.

As a ‘thank you’ to the local community, the store is giving away 1,000 bags of daffodil bulbs to customers on Thursday, October 1- a nod to Marie Curie’s iconic daffodil emblem.

The landmark £50,000 fundraising milestone was reached through a range of in-store and local community events designed to bring people together for a crucial cause.

Customers and staff alike threw themselves into an array of creative fundraising activities, from bingo nights and tombolas to sky dives and bucket collections. The variety of events ensured that everyone passing through the aisles had a chance to contribute, transforming routine shopping trips into opportunities to improve end of life care.

Marie Collis, Malton Morrisons Community Champion said, “We are absolutely thrilled and deeply humbled to be the first Morrisons store in the country to raise £50,000 for such a phenomenal charity. Our wonderful Malton customers have never hesitated to drop their spare change in a bucket or support our fundraising activities. Knowing that our local community’s generosity will help provide expert care to those in the final chapter of their lives is the greatest reward we could ever ask for.”

Morrisons Corporate Affairs Director David Scott said: “We are incredibly proud of our Malton store. Morrisons has almost 500 supermarkets across the country so to be the first to raise £50,000 for Marie Curie is a special achievement. It’s a testament to the dedication of store colleagues, the support of local Marie Curie volunteers, and the unwavering generosity of the local community.”

Lily Whitlam, Senior Partnerships Lead at Marie Curie, said: “This is an incredible milestone, and we can’t thank the team at the Malton store, their customers and local community enough. Their generosity and commitment to fundraising means that Marie Curie Nurses and healthcare professionals can continue to be there for more families at the end of life, whatever the illness, wherever they are.”

Kevin Hollinrake, MP for Thirsk and Malton, who is attending a celebration event at the store to mark the milestone achievement said “Raising £50,000 is a fantastic achievement and a real credit to the Morrisons Malton team, Marie Curie volunteers and the generosity of local customers. I’m delighted to be joining them to celebrate this milestone and to thank everyone who has helped raise such an impressive amount for a hugely important cause.”

Marie Curie supports people with any illness they are likely to die from including Alzheimer’s, heart, liver, kidney and lung disease, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s, and advanced cancer.

The amount raised at the Morrisons Malton store is enough to fund 2,175 hours of expert end of life care and support to people in their own homes, ensuring patients have the comfort and familiarity of being cared for in the place they know best. Across North Yorkshire, Marie Curie’s Hospice Care at Home service supported 223 patients at the end of life last year.

Marie Curie is Morrisons national charity partner, with a shared ambition to improve end of life care in local communities. Since launching the partnership in November 2024, Morrisons customers and colleagues have raised over £8 million for Marie Curie and made a meaningful difference in local communities.
