Motorists are being reminded to allow extra travel time following the closure of a major North Yorkshire road.

The A170 at Sutton Bank is closed both ways from Cross Hill to Sutton Bank National Park Centre due to construction work which is expected to last until 11pm on Sunday, October 4.

The closure of the steep section of the A170 for annual maintenance work means drivers face a 73-mile diversion.

North Yorkshire Council has extended the closure to three weeks to allow for additional drainage and repair work, as well as planned maintenance to the rock face.

The signed diversion, according to roadworks information from one.network, is 117.2 kilometres (72.8 miles) long and is expected to take about two hours.

The diversion route guides motorists through Helmsley and the Sinnington and Wrelton areas, continuing towards Malton and York.

This includes Cote Lane, Bondgate, Linkfoot Lane, New Road, Sinnington Cliff Road, Malton Road, North Lane, Ring Road, Shipton Road, York Road, and Sutton Road.

This diversion is in place throughout the closure period.

Sutton Bank climbs from the Vale of York towards the North York Moors.

The North York Moors National Park has said that Sutton Bank National Park Centre is still accessible from the Helmsley side.

Signed diversions have been put in place for motorists travelling from Thirsk.

Drivers are advised to follow the signed route and allow significantly more time for their journeys while the closure remains in place.
