FACIAL recognition technology is set to be launched in York later this week.

North Yorkshire Police has said that they are set to begin using live facial recognition (LFR) technology in York city centre on Wednesday (September 23) as part of efforts to identify wanted individuals and protect vulnerable people.

The county police announced the move earlier this year, stating that LFR will be used in "carefully selected, intelligence-led locations" across York and North Yorkshire starting from this week.

They said the technology is designed to help identify people who are wanted by police or the courts, suspected of committing offences, unlawfully at large, or wanted on recall to prison.

It can also be used to identify individuals who may be breaching bail conditions, court orders, or other restrictions, as well as helping find missing people.

A police spokesperson said: "If you see us while we're out and about on Wednesday, please feel free to come and speak to one of our engagement officers, who will be happy to tell you more about the technology and answer any questions you may have."

The system works by comparing live camera footage to a watchlist of individuals who meet 'the specified criteria' and if a potential match is identified, officers are alerted and will review the information, conduct further checks, and decide whether action is needed.

Images that do not match the watchlist are deleted permanently and the watchlist itself is deleted at the end of each deployment.
