York 50+ Festival returns for 21st year this October

The York 50+ Festival will run from Thursday, October 1, to Sunday, October 18, 2026, and is designed for people aged 50 and over.

It is organised by Age UK York and York Older People’s Assembly (YOPA).

Now in its 21st year, the festival features talks, performances, social events, and opportunities to try new activities.

It also includes the much-anticipated festival parade on Saturday, October 3.

"This festival offers a fantastic variety of events and activities, providing a wonderful opportunity for people to meet others, try something new and enjoy everything that York has to offer."

Organisers say the event is about more than just age, aiming to challenge stereotypes and celebrate the energy, creativity, and experience of older people in York.

Mr Holmes added: "We are really looking forward to sharing this special festival with the local community and can’t wait to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons on 1 October – a day to recognise and celebrate the valuable contributions older people make to our society, while highlighting the importance of inclusion and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live well.

This year’s programme includes several new events, including two fundraisers for Age UK York.

On Sunday, October 4, the inaugural York Beat the Boat challenge will see runners aged 50 and over race against a City Cruises boat along a 2.7km stretch of the River Ouse.

The winner will be determined using age-percentage data, meaning an 83-year-old could take the overall title.

Spectators are encouraged to watch from the passenger boat and cheer on participants.

Another highlight will be a tribute to The Goon Show on October 17, marking 75 years since its debut.

The event will feature two classic radio scripts performed live on stage, along with a look into the Borthwick Institute’s comedy archives.
