A festival celebrating the joy of walking is returning this autumn, promising guided walks and fresh perspectives across York.
The York Walking Festival will run from Saturday, September 19 to Sunday, October 4, offering a packed programme of events designed to help people explore the city and surrounding countryside on foot.
Walks will cover a wide range of themes, from history and heritage to nature and wildlife.
Richard Taylor, also known as The History Man and one of the festival’s guides, said: "The York Walking Festival offers a wonderful opportunity to step outside and uncover the city's hidden stories and best-kept secrets.
"There’s also a wide range of walks exploring different parts of York and covering everything from history and heritage to people and places, there's something for everyone."
The festival aims to be inclusive, with routes suitable for all experience levels and options for those using mobility aids or buggies.
Councillor Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport at City of York Council, said: "York is a wonderfully walkable city.
"The York Walking Festival is about helping people discover just how enjoyable it can be to get outdoors, exploring the city and spending time with others.
"Whether you're a regular walker or looking for a reason to get out and about, there’s something for everyone."
Walking is not only a great way to see the city but also brings significant health benefits.
NHS guidance shows regular physical activity can reduce the risk of major illnesses and improve overall wellbeing.
