North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue crews from York, Huntington and Northallerton responded to the report and found a fire measuring 400m x 400m.

A spokesperson said crews used four hose reel jets to extinguish the flames, with assistance from farmers to create fire breaks.

Eye witnesses watching the black smoke fill the air estimated that up to ten tractors had helped.
