York-born Hollywood star Dame Judi Dench has donated to a scheme offering free cinema tickets to older residents in a community.

Leigh Film Factory, in Park Lane, Leigh, an independent cinema run by volunteers, has launched a new membership programme called Silver Screen at the Factory.

This scheme starts in September and will allow residents aged 60 and over to enjoy regular cinema experiences free of charge.

The actress's donation will enable the cinema to provide complimentary tickets each month to those who sign up for the scheme.

Members will be given a Silver Screen membership card, which grants them access to a free ticket for a selected Sunday screening every month.

These screenings will feature films from the current programme, giving members the chance to enjoy the latest releases along with the general public.

In contrast to traditional senior cinema clubs, Silver Screen at the Factory is not a separate event.

This means members will be part of the usual cinema audience and can attend with their friends and family.

The first Silver Screen at the Factory screening will be Sunny Dancer, showing on Sunday, September 13.

Kevin Lowe, from Leigh Film Factory, said: "Cinema is about more than just watching a film - it's about coming together, sharing experiences and being part of a community.

"We wanted to create a scheme that helps more people enjoy everything that Leigh Film Factory has to offer, and we are incredibly grateful to Dame Judi Dench for making this possible."

"Her generosity will have a real impact, helping older residents enjoy the magic of cinema while also encouraging connection and social engagement."
