Police update after air rifle shot outside York Mosque

NORTH Yorkshire Police has issued an update following the arrest this morning of a man for allegedly "discharging a firearm" outside a York mosque (Thursday, July 30).

As reported by The Press, a 44-year-old man from York described by police as a white UK national was arrested this morning and remains in police custody for questioning after the alleged incident at the York Mosque and Islamic Centre in Bull Lane.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed the weapon involved was an air rifle.

Ed Haywood-Noble, superintendent and senior operational commander for York and Selby, said: "This incident is clearly deeply concerning for our communities.

"I can give reassurance that police acted swiftly to arrest the suspect, and a thorough investigation is underway.

"Any suspected offences will be put before the courts."

Officers from North Yorkshire Police continue to carry out CCTV reviews, forensic investigations and other enquiries.

Supt Haywood-Noble said: "Currently the motivation behind the incident is not clear.

"We are carrying out detailed enquiries to get a better understanding of the circumstances which resulted in the man’s arrest.

"Our Neighbourhood Policing Team are engaging with people who attend York Mosque and who have been left frightened."

He thanked the public for their patience and said patrols would be increased across the city to provide reassurance.

Anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage that could assist the investigation is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting reference number 12260145924.

Increased patrols are expected to continue in the area in the coming days.
