A stretch of the A19 in North Yorkshire remains closed after a trailer laden with hay caught fire.

The road is blocked both ways on the Easingwold bypass on Thursday morning (July 23) after the fire which broke out at about 10.45am on Wednesday.

Firefighters tackled the burning hay bales but the road remains closed for emergency repairs.

The AA said the A19 is blocked both ways from York Road to Thirsk Road but traffic is “coping well”.

It is not known what caused the straw to catch light or the cost of the damage.

North Yorkshire Council said the road is likely to remain closed for most of Thursday.

In a statement on Wednesday, the council said: "The A19 Easingwold bypass has been closed between the Thirsk Road Roundabout and Cross Lanes Roundabout to the south of Easingwold.

"This is due to a hay trailer fire. The road is expected to remain closed for several hours.

"Please avoid the area and use an alternative route."
