A choir is preparing to perform two concerts celebrating the choral music of Yorkshire and northern England.

The Malton-based Chanticleer Singers will perform in Lastingham and Malton on July 3 and 4 respectively, with a programme titled A Choral Celebration of Music from Yorkshire & the North.

The concerts will feature works by Yorkshire composers including Andrew Carter, Edward Bairstow and Philip Wilby.

William Dore, musical director of the Chanticleer Singers, said: "Each song is taken from a different part of our richly diverse county, representing different subject areas including history, love, courting and humour."

The programme also includes works by Kerry Andrew, Will Todd and Lucy Walker, as well as three Yorkshire folk songs specially arranged by Mr Dore.

Sacred pieces will be performed alongside regional folk music.

Prominent Yorkshire composer Andrew Carter was the choir’s longstanding president until he sadly passed away earlier this year.

Geoffrey Coffin will accompany the choir on organ, and the evenings will also feature two organ solos and readings of Yorkshire poetry.

The first concert will take place at St Mary’s Church in Lastingham at 7.30pm on Friday, July 3.

The second will be held at The Wesley Centre in Malton at 3pm on Saturday, July 4.

Tickets cost £12 and are available from www.chanticleersingers.org.uk, Hoppers in Malton, the Ticket Secretary by calling 01653-668320, or on the door.
