A local charity is urging residents to put on their running shoes and make a difference by supporting an important cause.

Scarborough and District Mencap is encouraging people to join Team Mencap at the Yorkshire Coast 10k in Scarborough on Sunday, October 11.

Funds raised will go towards the charity’s Big Build campaign, which aims to create a purpose-built centre and accessible housing for people with learning disabilities at its Brookleigh site in Valley Road.

Kim Turton, care coordinator at Scarborough and District Mencap, said: "Every runner who chooses to support Mencap will be helping us in two important ways – by raising awareness of our charity and the services we provide, and by raising vital funds for our Big Build campaign."

The charity’s current building, in use since 1978, can no longer meet the needs of those it supports, especially individuals with complex disabilities and mobility requirements.

Mencap staff will also be involved on the day, with two members planning to take part and others supporting runners at the event.

Nearly half of the 2,500 places for the race are already booked.

Spaces can be reserved at www.runforall.com/events/10k/yorkshire-coast-10k.
