Whitby Swing Bridge is closed to traffic for the bank holiday weekend.

With the exception of buses, Whitby swing bridge will be closed to traffic on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday this bank holiday weekend.

It will be closed between 10.30am and 4pm each day to improve pedestrian safety and to support the town’s economy.

The closures are taking place on weekends in the school holidays, as well as on bank holidays and special events - a full list of closures are available on the North Yorkshire Council website.

A police spokesperson said: "Disappointingly, last Saturday when the bridge was closed over one hundred vehicles ignored the signs travelling over the bridge.

"Please also note that St Ann's Staith also has restrictions between the same times on vehicle access with limited exceptions for loading, buses, taxis and permit holders.

"Have a safe and great bank holiday weekend!"
