A history museum is set to screen a documentary about one of the first attacks of World War I on British soil.

Malton-based Eden Camp will screen 'The Baby Killers: The 1914 Bombardment of Hartlepool, Whitby, and Scarborough' at The McCarthy, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, on Saturday, March 1.

The documentary, made by York-based father-and-son filmmakers Mick and George Child, looks at the attack, on December 16, 1914, which saw German battleships bombard the North East coast, causing devastation in the seaside towns of Hartlepool, Whitby, and Scarborough.

The attack led to significant civilian casualties and a fierce response from both the British public and government, with Winston Churchill referring to the Germans as "the baby killers of Scarborough."

Summer O’Brien, collections and engagement manager at Eden Camp, who presents the documentary, said: "Presenting and helping to create this documentary has been one of the most exhilarating and heart-warming experiences I’ve had.

"I am beyond excited and extremely proud to share this journey, knowing it will inspire and educate future generations.

"It’s a story which showcases the social impact of this catastrophic event, and it’s how I came to become the historian I am today."

The screening will take place at The McCarthy at 2.25pm and will run for one hour.

Tickets start from £6, and the screening will be followed by a live Q&A session with the filmmakers.
