The elves have done their counting and Ryedale Lions are delighted to announce that their trips around Ryedale with Santa have raised almost £12,000 to support local charities and good causes.

This sum is a combination of collections around the towns and villages and sponsorship from local companies and individuals.

Ryedale Lions recognise the growing importance of charity groups, organisations and individuals in ensuring there are sufficient elves for each collection.

Sleigh Organiser Ben Hayes said: “Santa’s Sleigh would not be possible without this help and a huge thank you goes out to everyone who has volunteered be it one night or, in some cases, seven or eight.”

This year had the added excitement of a new sleigh which was much appreciated by Santa and the families who came out to meet him.

Ben added: "The new sleigh went down really well and huge thanks go to Lion Geoff Bogg and to AF Rayspeed Ltd for their support with the project.”

Some 20 trips were made despite a couple of storms and the wettest December in years and included everything from a huge crowds in Pickering and Thornton le Dale for their Lights Switch Ons to waiting at the end of lanes for children living on isolated farms.

Ryedale Lions President , Andrew Mansfield, said" “Santa’s Sleigh has become part of Christmas in Ryedale and everyone involved puts in a massive effort. I think this years paddle around Ampleforth and Oswaldkirk will enter Ryedale Lions folklore. I also want to thank everyone who donated in what we all know are difficult times. Special thanks are also due to our sleigh sponsors . This is a fantastic result and will enable us to help good causes in many ways”

Andrew added: "Now the really good news-we are doing it again in 2024

"Could you help as a volunteer Friend of Ryedale Lions and help with collections, sponsor one of our Sleigh trips and be associated with all they mean?"
