A brass band which is celebrating 73 years of service to music is encouraging young budding musicians to take up an instrument in the new year.

Malton White Star Band is offering a free, introductory six week course, including instruments in January.

The band also recently celebrated the long service of one of its members, John Taylor who has been a member since it was set up.

John was presented with a trophy from North Yorkshire Cllr and Deputy Mayor of Malton Lindsay Burr.

Cllr Burr, a supporter of the band for many years, said: "It a was a joy and honour to present John with this much deserved trophy, he has committed so much time and effort to the Malton White Star Band, and we are so lucky as a community, to have dedicated musicians like John playing for residents. We all thank him so much for his service.

Cllr Burr added that she had always supported the arts locally and is encouraging all budding musicians to take up the offer.

The course starts on January 23 and runs to February 27.

It will be held on Tuesday evenings at The Band Room 39A Old Maltongate Malton YO17 9EH
