A NORTON councillor has challenged recent fines issued to vehicles parked in St Nicholas Street car park.

Cllr Keane Duncan said he had contacted North Yorkshire Councilโ€™s parking team to question a number of fines recently given in the free-to-use car park.

He said: โ€œI am pleased to report that the team have agreed with me that the fines were unlawful and not issued with authority due to the absence of a legal order on the car park.

โ€œPlease do not pay these fines. If you have already paid, a refund will be issued to you. If you experience any problems, please contact me and I will raise this with the team.

โ€œNo fines can legally be issued inside St Nicholas Street car park at present. Furthermore, I have sought agreement from the enforcement team that fines will not be issued on St Nicholas Street itself while temporary restrictions are in place due to the partial closure of Church Street.

โ€œThank you to those residents who have moved their vehicles from the street and into the car park. It would have been totally unfair for you to be punished for doing so. I am continuing to push the case with Yorkshire Water for Church Street to fully reopen, so normality can resume as soon as possible. Please standby for further updates.โ€
