An event is set to celebrate the lives of the founding members of Ryedale Leisure Club for Adults with Learning Disabilities.

The club, established in 1995, was initially planning to celebrate its 25th birthday in 2020.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their plans were disrupted.

Fortunately, the club was able to continue its activities through virtual meetings on Teams and by implementing strict safety measures for its members and volunteers.

Tragically, during the pandemic, the club suffered a devastating loss with the passing of Beryl and Edwin Cooke, the founding leader and her husband, to the virus.

The club has resumed its operations and now holds weekly Tuesday night gatherings at the Old Malton War Memorial Hall from 7pm-9pm.

In collaboration with the Malton Town Clerk, Gail Cook, the club has successfully installed a roadside bench at the Old Malton War Memorial Hall in memory of Beryl and Edwin.

The club will be hosting a dedication ceremony and celebration party to honour the legacy of these founding members.

John Yeomans, the volunteer chairman of the charity group, said: ohn said: "The Committee would like to invite you to the dedication and celebration of the life of our founder members.
"We hope you will be able to join us on the night as we celebrate Ryedale Leisure Club and all that Beryl and Edwin did to create and run this wonderful Club.”

Scheduled for the evening of July 25th, 2023, from 7pm to 9pm, the event will feature a dedication ceremony followed by a celebration with music and snacks provided.
