Scarborough Symphony Orchestra is gearing up for a "stunningly joyous occasion", according to their musical director Shaun Matthew.

The orchestra will be joined by a very special guest for their final concert of the season at Queen Street Methodist Hall on July 15 - Opera North's Andy Long.

Andy will take centre stage as the star soloist performing Dvořák's Violin Concerto.

Formerly with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Andy is now the acting co-leader of Opera North and the leader of the New World String Quartet as well as the New World Ensemble.

He is renowned for his solo concerto and recital performances throughout Britain and Europe, where he "indulges his passion for light music" in the Andy Long Orchestra, which he conducts.

British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s "dramatic yet lyrical" Ballade for Orchestra will kick off the concert.

The work was commissioned in 1898 after being highly recommended by Sir Edward Elgar who described Coleridge-Taylor as “far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst all the young men”.

The evening will come to a close with Brahms Symphony No.3, a "masterpiece of orchestral music" that has been firmly established as a favourite of concert halls all over the world.

Music lovers can secure tickets now by visiting the orchestra's website (www.scarborough-orchestra.org), by heading to Revolutions Music in Huntriss Row, Scarborough, or by purchasing on the door on the night of the concert, with doors opening at 6:15 pm.

Musical Director Shaun Matthew said: “This will be a stunningly joyous occasion and the perfect way to close our music season."
