AFTER an eventful and much improved 2022/23 newitts.com Beckett Football League campaign, Heslerton brought the curtain down on their season with the annual 'Last Hurrah’ fundraising game.

Again Manager Andy Stanton would call on players past and present from the Ryedale league, along with a couple of youngsters, to take on his current Heslerton crop, under the guidance on the evening by assistant Steve Allardice.

The Select XI started the brighter in attack with Kirkbymoorside’s Dan Ward heading just over the bar from a Morgan Kendrew corner, whilst regular Kirkdale United ‘keeper Sam Dawson saved well from in-form Blues striker Jordan Anderson.

Heslerton though would draw first blood, edging themselves in front with a superb finish by Jamie Atkinson after a great ball into the box from the season’s star player Josh Wade.

Current Blue Kendrew, captaining the All Stars in this event, then set up Ryedale’s Joe Wood, only for his on target effort to be gathered by the ‘keeper.

The Blues would double their advantage shortly before the interval with regular first-choice goalkeeper Simon Clark, playing outfield due to a wrist injury, tapping home a George Ridler cross.

The Select XI pushed for an early reply after the break, and were just rewarded when Rosedale Player /Manager Alastair Wilkinson released the ball from midfield, for Kendrew to finish acutely passed the keeper.

Chasing the equaliser left The Tangerines susceptible to a break and a last ditch tackle by youngster Warren Stanton would thwart a certain third putting the game out of sight.

Dan Ward then shaved the outside of the post with a dangerous free-kick from 20 yards but that would be the closest his side would come to scoring for the remainder, confirming that the Blues would retain the coveted Trophy.

All monies raised on the evening will be split between The Race for Life Cancer Charity and Heslerton Football Club.

The previous week saw the club also host their annual Presentation Evening at the Providence Inn in Yedingham.

Team Captain Ollie Stanton won The Storry Goal of the Season Award for his strike at Goal Sports in their Division Two encounter, which would turn out to be the decider in the club’s 4-2 victory.

The Young Player of the Year accolade went to 16-year-old Jake Allardice, who featured in all 35 fixtures, in his first season of Senior football. Tommy Palmer, again only 16, took the Runners Up spot.

Jamie Atkinson would win the award for Most Man of the Matches during the club’s eventful season that saw them play 20 league games and 15 cup fixtures - including five Quarter Finals, two Semi Finals and a Final.

The Manager’s Award went to full-back Josh Wade, with midfielder George Ridler a close second in that category.

Jack Pinder would finish as the club’s Top Goalscorer with 19, with Morgan Kendrew, who took home the Top Assists’ Award with 17, two goals shy.

Heslerton’s Clubman Shield, in honour of Chris Woodhead, would have a new name on it, that of Will Mitchell, a long-serving and still current player.

Lastly, the highly-commended Player’s Player of the Season Trophy would go to central defender Nathan Poole, with midfielder Rob Ruston the Runner Up.
