A Sport and Social Club run by a dedicated team of volunteers is holding a world record attempt this weekend as part of its fundraising efforts to update the facilities.

Slingsby Sports and Social Club will be holding a 24-hour darts marathon on March 11 and 12.

Darts will be thrown from 9am on March 11 continuously until 9am the following day - with an attempt being made to set the world record for the most points scored by a team in 24 hours on a Yorkshire doubles dart board.

The club, which has existed in the village for over 100 years, is fundraising to open the facilities to everyone in the area by providing updated and accessible changing rooms and showers, additional coaching resources, improved catering facilities, new accessible outdoor seating and sustainable energy solutions.

Paul Hogarth, Club Chairperson, said the money would transform the facilities and be the first significant update since the 1980s.

He said: "Slingsby Sports and Social Club has been the centre of village social and sports activities since at least the 1920s.

"As well as the use for sports, the club is also a central part of the community for events such as Car Boot Sales, Bonfire Nights, Social events such as New Years Eve and recently the incredible Jubilee Celebrations.

"Our vision is to transform the facilities available to all parts of our community, including people of all ages and backgrounds who use the club for either sports, play or socially.

"Having successfully made it through to Stage 2 of the Community Infrastructure Levy Grant funding offered by Ryedale District Council for its ‘Slingsby Sports for All’ project, the club is now crowdfunding to support the necessary match funding for the project.

"The crowdfunding campaign has a range of rewards including life membership, limited edition items and a range of experiences and is being added to daily. Additionally there are business sponsorship opportunities at the club which will also raise money for the project.

A range of events have been organised to fundraise for the campaign, which has a target of £20,000. This started with a successful race night and a quiz.

Paul said: "The main fundraising event, a 24 hour darts marathon. If you’re a keen darts player, just want to give it a go, or a darts team in Ryedale and beyond and would like to take part please get in contact with the club. Otherwise come and join us for a drink and to support the darts players in their marathon."
