A SPORTS club based in a Ryedale village has launched a campaign to help fund a move to a new site.

Westow Pétanque Club is currently based in the tennis court in Westow, and has launched a Crowdfunder campaign to raise £2,000 to meet its target of £12,000.

A spokesperson for the club said this money will enable it to build a new terrain on an unused area of the village’s cricket club, which also includes a pavilion.

Founded in the mid 1980’s, it is thought to be one of the first established pétanque clubs in North Yorkshire.

Pétanque is similar to bowls, but the boules are thrown instead of rolled.

The spokesperson said this move is needed to ensure improved access for players, and better facilities.

They added that club members have already been fundraising themselves, and have been successful in receiving grants from Ryedale District Council, the Lions Club and North Yorkshire County Council.

The club has also received an offer of stone for the base from Watts Quarry.

Ian Appleby, club chairman, said: “Our vision is to create a space where the community can congregate and partake in an activity that is inclusive of all ages and disabilities.

“In rural communities loneliness can be a big issue and one of our project aims is to bring people from the surrounding areas together.”

He added: “Your donations will enable us to complete this fantastic project."
