A LIBRARY in North Yorkshire is to close while a £450,000 revamp is carried out.

Scarborough Library is to undergo improvement work and will close on Saturday, February 18, and is scheduled to reopen on Monday, May 22.

Work will include relocating the children’s library to the front of the building, installing a new IT area and community and exhibition space - as well as new shelving, furniture, device charging points, redecoration, carpeting, and books.

The library secured £200,000 from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports/Arts Council England Libraries Improvement Fund – along with a £250,000 investment from North Yorkshire County Council.

NYCC’s executive member for libraries, Cllr Greg White, said: “I am very excited about these improvements at Scarborough library.

"The changes will result in a welcoming, modern space that meets the changing needs of the community.”

Customers will be able to borrow additional books to cover the closure period and arrangements have been made to cover home library service deliveries.

The mobile library will also visit Aberdeen Walk on Mondays, excluding bank holidays, between 2pm and 4pm during the closure period.
