NORTHERN POWERGRID has said that the fault which caused a string of power cuts in a Ryedale area over the festive period has been fixed.

As reported by the Gazette & Herald, there had been months of power cuts in Beadlam and Nawton impacting around 76 properties at a time.

The most recent power cuts were on December 24, 27 and 28.

Prior to this, there was a power cut on December 5 lasting almost 24 hours – which was later fixed by Northern Powergrid.

Northern Powergrid previously confirmed that these power cuts in late December were caused by an intermittent fault, but at the time could not say whether or not they were linked to the power cut on December 5.

Speaking to the Gazette & Herald in December, resident, Roger Taylor, explained that the power cuts in Nawton and Beadlam “have been happening on a regular basis for at least the last five years.”

Now, Northern Powergrid has confirmed that the fault, which caused the power cuts on December 24, 27, and 28, has been fixed.

A spokesperson for Northern Powergrid said: “Intermittent faults can prove difficult to locate and, for this reason, the local substation serving the YO62 postcode area has specialist equipment fitted to help us locate the fault and also automatically restore power for customers.

“On December 5 our engineers attended site and located a fault on the cable and carried out a full and permanent repair.

"Following the repair, we were not expecting customers to have any further disruption.

“On Christmas Eve, the fuse operated at the local substation, which indicated a second fault on the underground network.

"Following the interruption, our engineers carried out fault location work and identified the location of the second fault, with work scheduled for Friday, January 6, to complete a repair.

“We appreciate that this has been a frustrating period for our customers, especially as some of the interruptions occurred over the festive period.

"We would like to thank everyone for their patience whilst we have completed our investigations and repairs.”

Cllr George Jabbour

Beadlam and Nawton’s County Councillor George Jabbour said: “I visited the site where the engineers fixed the fault that had led to the power cuts in the Nawton and Beadlam area.

“I am pleased that Northern Powergrid responded positively to our request and acted quickly despite the Christmas and New Year holiday.

“For the sake of local residents, we all hope that this will solve the problem permanently and that there will be no further power cuts for the affected properties.

“I also would like to thank our local MP Kevin Hollinrake for his support and assistance on this matter.”
