A TABLE tennis tournament was held in a Ryedale village in memory of one of the club’s players who lost his life aged 29.

Amotherby Table Tennis Club held a tournament in memory of Kris Waluk, who died around 15 years ago.

Kris suffered a severe stroke and was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary where he was put into an induced coma and later died.

He moved to Malton from Poland and played at the club in Amotherby after forming a friendship with club member, Nick Knight.

The pair met while working together in the kitchen at Rivermead Care Home, in Norton.

Nick, 62, who lives near Castle Howard, described Kris as a “bouncy little character.”

To pay homage to Kris, Nick said the club planned to put on a “fun and light-hearted event” in his memory.

19 played in the tournament on December 28 at Amotherby Village Hall.

There were three competitions, and the juniors took the win in all three.

Club chairperson, Linda Clarke, said: “Mince pies were eaten, fancy hats were encouraged, and trophies given out.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves.”

Linda explained how the club has wanted to hold the tournament for many years, but this was the first chance to do so.

It also aims to repeat the event next year (2024).
