POLICE have announced that over 100 people have been arrested for driving under the influence in North Yorkshire and York as officers crack down on drink and drug driving over the festive period.

North Yorkshire Police launched its Christmas drink and drug drive campaign on December 1, and since then officers have arrested 104 people for drink and drug driving.

Eight of these drink or drug driving arrests were on Christmas Day itself.

A spokesperson for the force said: “At the start of the campaign, we committed to proactively patrolling our area in marked and unmarked vehicles to intercept drink and drug drivers.

“We also warned people that we would be conducting static roadside checks.

“We’ve been out in force every day this month.”

This year’s campaign is endorsed by actor Mark Charnock who plays Marlon Dingle in the Yorkshire based soap Emmerdale.

Mark participated in a mock road traffic collision to show members of the public the harsh reality of drink and drug driving.

The campaign ends at midnight on Sunday, January 1, 2023.

As the campaign reaches its final day officers are reminding people to plan their journey home, and if they suspect someone is drink or drug driving to “save a life and call it in.”
