North Yorkshire Police

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “It is difficult to compare the overall number of crimes recorded for the last few years as the pandemic had a significant impact on both levels of crime and instances of specific crimes.

“We work hard to engage with our local communities on the many issues which affect them and encourage the public to report crimes and incidents to us.

“We know there are certain crimes which are still underreported so we would reiterate our message that reporting incidents to us is so important and can be done either online or by phone.

“It not only means we can offer victims safeguarding and support, but it helps us to build a picture of offending so we can deploy our resources where they are most needed.

“Antisocial behaviour remains a key concern for our communities and our neighbourhood policing teams continue to work hard dealing with hot spot areas, identifying offenders and working in partnership with local organisations to develop long term solutions.

“Antisocial behaviour isn’t always reported but we would really encourage communities to get in touch and let us know about incidents in your local area.

“We also continue our work to ensure victims of sexual abuse have the confidence to come forward and we believe the increase in reports reflects this. However, we know many cases of sexual abuse and violence remain un-reported.

“We understand the devastating impact this type of crime has on its victims and that’s why we make it our priority to robustly investigate all cases reported to us and provide specialist support to those who need it.

“We would urge anyone who is a victim to contact the police or our partner agencies to seek the help and support that is available.

“Your information could also trigger measures that are put in place to protect other victims and help to inform a bigger picture of offending – both of which can protect and potentially reduce the risk to future victims.

“We are here 24/7 to help you and to ensure North Yorkshire’s communities are safe and enjoyable places to live and work.

“If you need us, you can call 101 or 999 in an emergency, or you can report online via our website.”
