A MALTON business owner has reported a record run up to Christmas with the town firmly on the map as a great place to visit and shop.

Sally Vaughan, who runs Scoops in St Michael's Street said there was lots to celebrate with on average 50 more sales every week than the previous year.

Her comments come after a fellow Malton shop owner, said she faced closure in the new year due to escalating costs and shopping online or multi nationals.

Davina Mortimer, who owns The Beecham Weigh, in Yorkersgate, posted on social media that she was one of the six considering closure.

"Apart from the coffee shops, on Saturday Malton was dead," she added.

" I stood in the centre of town all day carolling and it was like a ghost town. Again today, streets were empty. Malton needs to be more than ‘just’ food."

However, Sally said the opposite was true and Malton was thriving.

"People think there is no point going to Malton, as they are all shutting down when the opposite is true.

"We are thriving, there are many strong businesses in town.

"With all the doom and gloom in the national media I think it would be great to see us all celebrate what a wonderful town we have and there are many reasons to visit here.

"We really are on the map as a great place to visit and shop.

Scoops have had a record December, the footfall in 2022 has been greater for us than any previous year.

The general mood of people is post covid they are celebrating in style with lots of family.

They are loving shopping locally with us and all the other businesses in Ryedale.

"I think Scoops, Malton and Ryedale in general have a lot to celebrate this year compared to other towns around the country."

Malton was recently revealed to be the ‘most in demand property hotspot' in England.

Property experts at GetAgent analysed global searches for houses for sale in locations across the UK and compared these with the number of properties currently available for sale on Rightmove.

They used this data to find the locations that are most in demand right now - and awarded them a 'lusted after score'.

Topping the list is Malton, at 78 per cent.

The town was also the only English location to feature in the UK top ten locations.
