Change in moods for this World Cup

Rory Queen, owner of Chapter Two Bar, in Malton, said that there has been a lack of buzz around this year’s World Cup.

The bar has a small room with a TV for those wanting to watch matches, which quickly filled up with regulars.

The owner, however, said this World Cup has differed to those of past years.

He said that holding the tournament in winter and in Qatar has affected the reaction from fans.

“(There’s) not been a lot of interest,” said Rory.

Holding the games in Qatar has meant games are being played through the week, and sometimes in the afternoon - as is the case for the England game today (November 21).

This has meant many fans are at work and not able to come to pubs to watch.

“How do you advertise a game at 1pm?” He asked.

Rory explained that the pub has introduced successful live music events, quiz nights, and bingo nights to increase footfall after Covid.

“We’re trying to get people back out and talking to people,” he said.

Rory added that he hopes the World Cup will help increase trade for pubs as the matches go on and momentum builds throughout the tournament.
