Pickering Musical Society, fresh from its pantomime success, are busy rehearsing for their latest production ‘Let Yourself Go’.
Traditionally, the musical society produces a four-night concert based around the Pickering Wartime Weekend.
However this year, with the event being cancelled by the NYMR due to the current situation in Ukraine, the society has opted to create a whole new production.
This year’s concert will focus on the music of the early to mid 20th century, featuring songs from the music hall to the glamour of Hollywood – the society hopes you’ll all join in the fun and sing along with their fabulous music hall section, reminding us all of those good old days.
The concert also features favourites from the 1930s and 1940s from London’s Tin Pan Alley.
The second half of the production will take the audience across the pond and to the music of the Great American Songbook from classic films starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to Judy Garland and many more.
Audiences will be pleased to see the full membership of the society performing, along with their Youth Theatre and Society stalwarts such as Marcus Burnside, Stephen Temple and Rachel Anderson.
The concert is once again directed and produced by society life member Maureen Symonds, with the able support of musical director Clive Wass. Maureen said: “I have really enjoyed putting together this year’s production and having the freedom to select music from outside the war years.”
The October concert provides a large amount of revenue to both Covid and with the war in Ukraine, the cancellation of the wartime weekend didn’t come as a shock. However, this event creates in excess of 10% of revenue for the theatre and this year we are looking at a large financial black hole.
“I am pleased we have been able to put together a wide ranging new concert to fill our schedule and to hopefully appeal to both visitors and the people of Pickering alike.”
Let Yourself Go runs from October 13 to the 16 at the Kirk Theatre in Pickering. Tickets are priced from £13 and can be obtained from the Kirk Theatre box office, which is open on Tuesdays from 11am to 1pm or by telephone on 01751 474833 or online at www.kirktheatre.co.uk
