AFTER 18 months of Weetabix-driven Indie-pop, Bright Young Things have become the latest beast to fall in the elephant graveyard that is Ryedale rock.

Having performed their last show at The Lodge in Malton, Bright Young Things have seemingly gone out with a bit of a whimper in comparison with Ryedale legends of the past.

Unfortunately, the band did suffer from putting a lot of effort into practising and not so much into the 'sorting out gigs' side of things, which were seemingly as sparse as a pacifist getting in a fistfight!

But we shouldn't dwell on what didn't happen, let us gather round and talk about the life that was Bright Young Things.

The band was made up of 'Jazzy Jeff' on bass, 'Chelley Monster' on guitar and vocals, 'Hairy Hampsh' on lead guitar and 'Dean Lurch' on drums.

The Indie quartet formed at Malton School in early 2006 and from there they began to develop an indie-pop sound with a slight edge. The band struggled due to a lack of having a solid recording behind them, and as a result judgement was best made on Bright Young Things at their live shows.

These shows saw BYT deliver energetic and tight sets that impressed. Like so many bands in the Malton and Norton area, Bright Young Things excelled at Suddaby's, filling the backroom with a hardcore local fan base and making sure the night was simply about having a sing, a dance and a really good time.

So it is with an air of sadness that we say goodbye to yet another local band as the scene grows ever smaller.

However, like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, I can confirm a new band has arrived from the demise of BYT in the form of Captain Snuggles and the Lemonade Shack, which comprises "Dean Lurch", formerly BYT's drummer, "Jazzy Jeff", formerly BYT's bassist and local rock legend Sam Davies and his trusty sidekick Will, who will be performing on guitar and vocals respectively.

Captain Snuggles and the Lemonade Shack currently do some classic indie-pop and pop-punk covers by the likes of The Killers and Fall Out Boy, and will be arriving at a gig near you soon!

The other two former members of BYT have said that they will be starting a new musical venture shortly, so stay tuned for news on that.

Hopefully you have got your head round all of those nicknames and band names.

Honestly...kids today!
