A POPULAR North Yorkshire attraction is set to host a series of free events.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has joined with Heritage Open Days, a free national festival celebrating history and culture, for a number of events between September 9 and 18.

In Pickering, there will be a tour of the LNERCA Atkins Building (September 11,12, 14, 15 and 18), signal box demonstrations at the town’s station (September 10 and 17), Q&A sessions with Ron Pickering (September 9 and 14), and tours of the £4 million carriage care facilities (September 10,16 and 18).

Over in Grosmont there will be a tour of the Motive Power Depot (September 10 and 11), and a lineside conservation activity (September 11).

There will also be a lineside conservation activity in Levisham on September 19.

Chris Price, General Manager at NYMR, said: “We’re particularly excited about year’s theme which is ‘Astounding Inventions’ as it couldn’t be more of a perfect fit for us at the NYMR, and what we’re trying to achieve when educating our visitors about the past and importance of heritage railways and preserving this precious legacy for future generations to come; after all, where would we be without steam trains?”
