KEVIN HOLLINRAKE has called on ministers to postpone any final decision on the Linton-on-Ouse asylum centre until a new government is elected.

In a letter to Kevin Foster, Minister for Immigration, the MP for Thirsk and Malton said: “Given the ongoing concerns raised by ball stakeholders, the overdue response to the pre-action letter from Hambleton District Council and the imminent change in Prime Minister, I would appreciate that you will postpone any final decision on the (proposed asylum reception centre at Linton-on-Ouse) until a new government is in place.”

The plans to create an asylum reception centre at the former RAF base have been criticised previously by Hollinrake, who described it as ‘wrong plan, wrong place’.

A new Prime Minister is set to be elected on September 5, following Boris Johnson’s resignation as leader of the Conservative Party.

Johnson’s resignation came after the resignations of over 50 MPs including the former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, who is now running in the Tory Leadership contest.

Sunak has been named in the top two candidates, running against Liz Truss to become the next Prime Minister of the UK.

Hollinrake previously said that he would be backing Sunak for PM, praising the former Chancellor's reputation of 'calm competence.'
