A WELL-LOVED Malton pub has reopened its doors.

The Spotted Cow, on Spital Street, Malton, reopened last month after being taken over by a new tenant.

Owners of the property, the Fitzwilliam (Malton) Estate, said that the previous tenants, Punch Taverns, vacated the site in 2018, and since then there has been an extensive refurbishment to the grade II listed building.

The pub is now being operated by Terry Johnston.

Terry explained how he wanted to keep the 16th century pub true to its roots.

He said: “In the past (The Spotted Cow) was known predominantly as a racing and farmers pub.

“Whilst we have retained this attraction in our main bar, we have also sought to attract a newer clientele by turning the old pool room into a cosy lounge style room and totally upgrading the ladies’ toilets.

“The third room we have kept as an old traditional tap room thus appealing to all ages and really feel we have something for everyone.

“Feedback has been extremely positive.”

The pub boasts a wide drink selection with 10 different beers on offer.

Among these beers is Tetley’s, paying home to the Spotted Cow’s blue plaque from the brewery awarding the pub ‘Heritage Inn’ status.

Terry added that the next step is to start serving food.

After opening on June 24, Terry said business has booming.

“We opened with a small soft launch and within one hour we had 50 customers in, purely through word of mouth,” he said.

“Since then, we’ve had a very good flow of old and new customers.

“The pub was closed for four years and it’s been really pleasing to see how much the locals and also newbies really love this place.”

Terry, 55, recently moved to Malton after living in Estonia with his partner, Eva.

He said: “We decided last September to come to England and take on the Spotted Cow.

“Although I was born in Dublin and grew up in London, I’ve had a close affinity with Malton for the last nine years through my interest in horse racing and having a share in a horse here with a local trainer.”

The pub was visited by Sir Phillip and Tom Naylor-Leyland who met with Terry and members of the Malton estate after it reopened.

Terry said: “Sir Phillip and Tom Naylor-Leyland visited on July 5 and really loved what we have done so far.

“They returned on July 7 and Tom posted pictures on his Instagram account.”

Rebecca Wilkin, head of estate at Fitzwilliam (Malton) Estate said: “We’re delighted to see The Spotted Cow open for business again.

“We wish Terry and Eva every success in the future.”
