PEOPLE are urged to share photographs of themselves wearing socks and sandals today for ‘Socks and Sandals Day.’

The campaign has been organised by English Heritage, who are calling on the UK to share their photographs to mark the 1900th anniversary of the commencement of the building of Hadrian’s Wall.

Those docking socks and sandals are asked to @EnglishHeritage and use #SocksandSandalsDay when posting the photographs on social media

Wearers of the controversial fashion trend can also enjoy free access to English Heritage’s Roman Sites across the UK today (July 8).

At these locations, those sporting the often tabooed look will be in with a chance of winning a pair of special Roman-themed socks designed by artist Luke Edward Hall to pair with their sandals.

Of these Roman Sites include Aldborough Roman Town in Boroughbridge.

Frances McIntosh, English Heritage’s collections curator for Hadrian’s Wall, said: “Socks and sandals have seen a resurgence of late with celebrities like David Beckham and Rihanna donning this previously controversial trend, but it might be surprising to many that we can actually trace our penchant for comfort and style right back to the Romans.

“We hope members of the public will be inspired by the Romans and join us this Socks and Sandals Day by sharing their best socks and sandals looks on social media and then joining us – for free – at one of our Roman sites.

"Birkenstocks, gladiators, snazzy socks – we can’t wait to see them on social media!”
