For this week's Trader of the Week we feature The Shearing Shed in Rillington run by Tracey Ireland.

How long has the business been going?

We opened the hair salon on the 1st of August 2019

What does it sell/do?

It started out as just a hair salon but has grown into doing all aspects of beauty, massage, aesthetics, spray tans, ear and nose piercings,

Why is this business special?

Located in the rural village of Rillington on the A64 with "on the door step parking".

Our chic new salon is the perfect addition to the village, offering hair, nails and beauty at affordable prices.

We service a number of villages in the local area.

Since opening the business 2019 the feedback for the local community has been so positive. The locals no longer have to make a 10 mile round trip to have a hair cut and have beauty treatments. The salon is also a hub for locals to have a tea or coffee and a chat and a listening ear.

How has it adapted during the Covid-19 crisis?

Covid has been an extremely difficult time for us as we were a very new business when covid struck. At the time we were still building up our clients and of course we are still a new business. Even though we have technically been open over two and a half years, technically due to covid its actually only one and a half.

What is your favourite story/anecdote about this business/trader?

Tracey myself the owner was brought up on a farm at East Heslerton where I lived for 25 years with my parents and brother. As I was a farmer's daughter I worked in agriculture for 20 years. At the age of 39 I decided to open a hair salon which I intended to just manage and employ staff. However, things don't always go according to plan and at the Age of 40 I decided to re train as a hair dresser. I then did a two -year hair dressing course which was extremely difficult due to covid, and a lot of learning on line took place. I am now doing Level 2 Barbering and took my exams last week.

What do you like about working in Ryedale?

When we have more than one client in the salon, as we are a village salon, more often than not the clients know each other and it creates a lovely atmosphere as they happily chat away to each other, sometimes having not seen each other for years. It is lovely to see people re united as friends.
