RYEDALE'S MP has come under a barrage of criticism for agreeing with an article written by TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp that young people should 'move to a cheaper area' in order to buy a house.

Kevin Hollinrake MP for Thirsk and Malton tweeted that a feature in today's Sunday Times was 'good advice'.

According to Ms Allsopp young people could afford to get on the property ladder if they gave up luxuries such as their gym membership and foreign holidays and looked at cheaper areas.

The Location, Location, Location presenter, the daughter of a baron, said she felt “enraged” when people claimed they could not afford a home.

Some graduates and school-leavers could consider moving back in with their parents, she added.

Cllr Steve Mason, Liberal Democrat member of Ryedale District Council said on social media: "This is so annoying, it just is not that simple. Finding affordable homes to buy for local residents here is so hard.

"Encouraging our youngsters to just leave doesn't seem to be very forward thinking."

Liberal Cllr Mike Potter said housing issues were deep rooted and long standing problems.

"Long standing since Thatcher chose to sell off council houses and stopped the cash being re-invested in new stock. Social housing is now the only affordable alternative for the vast majority of those not on the housing ladder (other than not leaving home) and there are precious few left and precious few being built."
