North Yorkshire’s library service is joining the national commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27 with a series of events.

Each year the UK observes Holocaust Memorial Day to remember those who suffered in the Holocaust under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. January 27 1945 marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

This year’s theme is “One Day” which encourages people to learn about the past in the hope that there will come a day with no genocide.

County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries, said: “It’s great to see our libraries join the nation in commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day.”
