The A64 is currently closed both ways near Malton.
Diversions are in place and people are being asked to avoid the area.
A police spokespersonn said: "If you are planning on travelling along the A64 this evening please note it is closed at Malton
"We are currently at the scene, along with other emergency services, following a serious collision near to the junction with Scarborough Road.
"We expect the road to be closed for some time and we encourage you to seek an alternative route.
"If you were driving along the A64 in this area at around 5pm this afternoon you may be able to help us establish the circumstances surrounding the collision. We would urge you to get in touch.
"Please provide reference NYP-15012022-0367."
National Highways have tweeted that the road is closed between the A169 and the B1248.
