Malton library is to temporarily close next month to accommodate a programme of carbon-cutting measures as part of North Yorkshire County Council's (NYCC) aim to improve energy efficiency.

Government public sector decarbonisation funding will fund improvements to a number of County Council buildings, particularly for the replacement of windows.

“This programme is key to supporting our ambition of becoming carbon zero by 2030 as making our buildings more energy efficient is a major strand of our reduction plan,” said County Council Leader Councillor Carl Les.

“Malton library is just one of our buildings and infrastructure to benefit from the scheme – as well as several schools and care homes – which will improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.”

The library will be closed from Monday, September 6, until Saturday, September 25.

It will reopen at 9.30am on Monday, September 27.

Loan periods have been adjusted so that no borrowed items will be due for return during the closure, and arrangements have been made to cover home library service deliveries.

County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries and Climate Change, said: “It’s great to hear that Malton library is among the buildings to benefit from the earmarked decarbonisation funding.

“Although the closure will be an inconvenience to some, this is essential work and all schemes must be delivered by March 31, 2022.

Cllr White added: "We hope regular users can visit other libraries or take advantage of our fantastic online resources while work is ongoing.”
