THE artistic talents of pupils has been celebrated in an annual competition.

Terrington Hall School holds an exhibition of the work of all the students each summer term.

Their week is displayed throughout various areas of the school buildings.

This year’s competition was judged by York based artist Sharon McDonagh, whose paintings and multi-media works explore the beauty of decay on surfaces and pattern in images referencing everyday lives, evoking memories of the past.

Philip Magson, Head of art and 3D design at Terrington Hall School, said: "It turned out to be a fun experience for Sharon, especially when she learned a little about the personalities of the young artists once she’d made her choices.

"She spent quite a while deliberating over her decisions, often struggling over whether to reward technique or feeling – head versus heart.

Philip added: "Some of the winners maybe surprised me, others I would have chosen myself.

Sharon said: "I can’t believe how difficult this is.

" It is a truism of art being so subjective, one could find numerous different responses to the same image.

" Ultimately, I used the maxim of ‘What would I prefer to hang on my own wall?’ while acknowledging the fact that not everyone would agree with her choices."

The winners were Willow Armitage – My Room; Roma Bensalem – Still Life in style of Cezanne and Lily Stott – Parrot collage

Sharon McDonagh currently has work on display in Sketch at York City Art Gallery and will shortly be taking part in York Open Studios.
