A NEW cycling club is appealing for more members to join their social bike rides.

Over the last eight years, cycle wear brand Fat Lad At The Back (FLAB) has helped cyclists of all abilities to take part in fun, social and supportive group cycling events.

FLAB, launched in 2013, sells a range of sportswear to encourage cyclists - whatever their weight or fitness ability - to take to the road without feeling uncomfortable in unflattering and tight-fitting clothing.

FLAB has also launched more than 40 social bike rides across the country – and now one has been established in Malton. FLAB Social Rides Malton is led by ambassador Julie Pennock, who said everyone is welcome to join in.

“FLAB social rides are an opportunity for all types of cyclists to ride together with our ‘no-one gets left behind’ approach,” said Julie.

“It’s just a nice spin out on the bike with friendly people and lovely chat. All you need is a helmet, bike and a good sense of humour.

“I approached Fat Lad At The Back to see if they wanted to establish a group in Malton. They responded with a resounding yes.

“North Yorkshire is a beautiful area with so many cycling routes to explore. We always match the pace of the slowest rider, and no-one gets left behind.”

The social bike rides start at the Stew and Oyster, in Malton, every Tuesday at 6.30pm and Sunday at 9.30am. No route is the same; the group select a different location each week and even stop for coffee and cake at a café.

“The Tuesday group is a confidence building session and we cycle around 20 to 25 miles,” added Julie.

“The Sunday group is slightly longer of around 40 miles.

“The health benefits of cycling are amazing because it gets you outside, enjoying the fresh air and making new friends. It’s great for your mental health too.

“We have an eclectic mix of members, from retirees to healthcare workers. It is a lovely social group and everyone is welcome to join in.”
