ALMOST 230 tractors took part in the 19th Beadlam Charity Tractor Run in memory of its founder.

Bernard Simpson founded the Beadlam Charity Tractor Run in 2003, which is now one of the UK’s largest annual tractor runs and has to date raised almost £120,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Bernard, who was presented with numerous awards for his fundraising work, passed away peacefully at home in Beadlam on February 13, aged 91.

From humble beginnings with just 35 tractors taking part, the first event raised £1,700 for the charity. The following year the number of vehicles and the amount raised more than doubled.

This year, the tractors started at Wombleton Airfield on May 30 (Sunday) at 9.30am and followed a 50-mile route through Ryedale villages.

Bernard’s son, Malcolm, said the donations are still being counted.

“It has been a record-breaking year for entries, with almost 230 tractors taking part,” said Malcolm, an estate worker from Kirkbymoorside.

“The Beadlam Charity Tractor Run was sadly cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“By that point, around 80 tractor drivers had already entered. The entrants generously donated their entry fee and around £1,400 was raised for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

“We felt pleasantly surprised by the number of spectators who showed up and supported our local air ambulance charity.

“It was a fantastic day for all who were involved in any way and the weather was incredible.

"A huge thanks to all who helped to make this such a successful event.

"We are still collecting donations, if anyone would like to support us in reaching our fundraising target.”

Yorkshire Air Ambulance is an independent charity which provides a lifesaving response. To keep both air ambulances maintained, the charity needs to raise £12,000 every single day, which is the equivalent of £4.4m a year.
