FEARS over funding have been raised by the arts industry following the announcement of a second lockdown.

Ryedale theatres and entertainment venues, including Helmsley Arts Centre (HAC) and the Milton Rooms, in Malton, say they are “hugely disappointed” about having to close again due to the latest restrictions.

HAC recently launched a campaign to raise £50,000 in 90 days, which aims to cover lost income and moving forwards while the centre is on a reduced capacity. So far, the campaign has raised more than £40,494.

“We are hugely disappointed that Helmsley Arts Centre is having to close, but of course we must put public health first,” said HAC’s artistic director Natasha Jones.

“Our programmed events, workshops and cinema screenings have been cancelled or postponed and our customers refunded.

“The income from the 1812 Pantomime is crucial to HAC, but the connections and relationships built within the company, from five year olds to 85 year olds, are something which we all treasure.

“Our Light Up HAC fundraising appeal is going well and we have been overwhelmed with support from our communities, but we’re not quite at our target yet so any support given to help us get there is greatly appreciated. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us in such a difficult time.”

The Milton Rooms, in Malton, had organised four successful Covid-secure events in September and October, including two Ryedale Blues Club nights, a performance of Three Men in a Boat and a free concert by Taphouse Burnout.

“It is disappointing to have to close again after working so hard,” said Lisa Rich, venue manager.

“The Milton Rooms is run mainly by hard-working volunteers and, with no money coming in, we still need to find around £4,000 a month to keep the building running and pay outstanding bills, including utilities and insurance.

“Therefore, we are launching a renewed crowdfunding appeal in the next few days to get us through this difficult time until we are once more allowed to reopen our doors.

“We hope people will give what they can to keep the Milton Rooms going as a vital community hub for everyone in the region to enjoy.’’
