A RYEDALE arts venue is appealing for more donations to help it reach its £50,000 target to cover lost revenue during the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, Helmsley Arts Centre (HAC) launched Light Up HAC with the aim of raising the amount in 90 days. So far, more than £5,078 has been raised, with 75 days to go.

The fundraising campaign hopes to compensate for the losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Like all theatres across the country, HAC closed its doors during March because of lockdown.

“Your donations can make a huge difference,” said Natasha Jones, HAC’s artistic director.

“By giving £20 you can help to maintain the varied programme of events for all ages; £50 pays for a bursary place for a term in the 1812 Youth Theatre and £100 would contribute greatly towards the costs for theatre and music projects with local schools.”

As an independent charity, it costs about £400 per day to maintain the building and core staff, and another £400 to provide a full programme of arts activities.

The programme includes a broad range of theatre, music of all genres, comedy, spoken word, talks, exhibitions, classes, workshops, courses, cinema, live screenings from National Theatre Live, RSC and Bolshoi Ballet.

Classes and activities are taught during the half-term holidays for children of all ages, including ballet, yoga, creative writing, choir and musical theatre.

Ryedale artists also showcase a variety of visual art exhibitions throughout the year.

“Although we are delighted to be able to welcome visitors back to HAC, we won’t be able to operate at full capacity for quite some time,” added Natasha.

“You can help to light up the building by donating today and taking your place in the spotlight with your name on the Light Up HAC landscape in Helmsley Arts Centre.

“Our survival right now depends on the support of our community.”
