A GALLERY is challenging people to flex their creativity during the coronavirus lockdown.

Welburn Art Gallery is a temporary, outdoor gallery, showcasing residents’ artwork on lampposts, telegraph poles and fences in the village.

After the government’s announcement on the closure of art galleries, people were invited to submit original photographs, oil paintings and craft projects.

Led by Helen Mahoney, owner of Bloom Arts, the project has been commissioned for a second exhibition in July.

“There seems to be so little to look forward to right now,” said Helen.

“In the early stages of the pandemic, it seemed like most art and culture was being moved online.

“I wanted to create something in the real world that could celebrate the creativity of local people and bring the community together at this difficult time.”

The Welburn Art Gallery was supported by the Howardian Hills AONB Joint Advisory Committee and will hopefully be the first in a series of cultural events in Ryedale.

“I was a bit concerned that I would only end up with a few pictures, but the reaction has been fantastic and residents of all ages have got involved,” said Helen.

“People have told me the lockdown has given them more time to work on their creative projects or rediscover a passion for art.”

The current exhibition is on display until the end of June. For more information, visit welburnartgallery.blogspot.com
