ESSENTIAL repair work will be carried out on various roads around Malton town centre, starting on Monday.

Drainage and footpath works will take place in Newbiggin, Wheelgate, Old Maltongate and Yorkersgate, and will take more than seven weeks.

It will take place on weekdays between 6pm and 6am to minimise disruption for motorists and businesses. At times Old Maltongate and Yorkersgate will be closed, but there will be advance notification boards and a signed diversion in place.

The drainage work will see some of the roadside gullies and bungs replaced to prevent fumes and odours from the combined surface water and sewerage drainage system.

Footpath works will involve replacing worn and damaged paving slabs and resurfacing some sections.

County Cllr Don Mackenzie, the North Yorkshire County Council's executive member for access, said: “We are very pleased to be starting this work.

"Inevitably there will be some noise disruption and access to properties will be limited at times.

"However, we hope people appreciate that the work is essential and look to the long-term benefits.”
