HORTICULTURAL committees are facing an unknown period “like nothing before” due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In Bloom groups around Ryedale have suspended activities due to Government restrictions on social distancing and daily exercise.

Members of Thornton-le-Dale Hub are particularly devastated, after being selected to represent North Yorkshire in the Large Village Category, in the now cancelled Britain in Bloom.

“Bloom is not all about planting up, although it does play a big part,” said Denise Rajab, the Thornton-le-Dale In Bloom coordinator.

“It is more about bringing the community together, as well as highlighting other important aspects of the environment.

“Unfortunately, we are unable to plant up, but it doesn’t stop us growing the plants from seed.

“The planting of more than 6,000 bulbs over the last two years, has given Thornton-le-Dale a lovely array of colour at this time, which I think has lightened the spirits.

“We are determined here in Thornton-le-Dale to represent Yorkshire in the Large Village Category in the best possible way.”

A spokesperson for the Royal Horticultural Society said: “Communities put huge year-round effort to the benefit of both people and the environment.

“We thank those involved for all the hard work they’ve put in so far to make the UK a cleaner, greener and more beautiful place, and their amazing community spirit that will be very important to people in the difficult times ahead.”

Gaynor De Barr, chairman of the Kirkbymoorside in Bloom, added: “Each season has its horticultural challenges; however, this year is one like no other.

“In these truly dark times we all need a glimpse of joy, hope, solace and hopefully celebrations when the restrictions are lifted.

“Self-isolation is a real challenge for us, but those who are able to without risk are incorporating watering into their daily exercise schedule in the quiet of early mornings or later evenings.

“We remain optimistic that we’re able to produce hanging baskets later in the year and the lovely colour scheme planned for our tubs is being rolled over to next year.

“We will be doing our best to keep Kirkbymoorside blooming.”
