EVENTS across Ryedale are been cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus.

Malton Show will not go ahead on June 28 and Ryedale Show on July 28 has also been cancelled.

Charlie Breese, chairman of Malton Agricultural Society,:” Due to the extenuating circumstances our whole country faces in the face of the coronavirus outbreak, the Executive Committee have agreed that this year’ show will not take place.

“It is with great sadness that we find ourselves having to make this decision, but we will all have to baton down the hatches and just look forward to the Show in 2021.

“We will be sorry not to see so many of you at the glorious Showground at Scampston Park this year, but I wish you all ongoing good health, happiness and prosperity.”

Christine Thompson, secretary of Ryedale Show, said: “Unfortunately, we have had to make the sad decision this week to cancel our 2020 Show.

“Trade stand businesses and Show Day members will be contacted shortly with further information. In the meantime, take care of yourselves and we’ll see you next year - Tuesday, July 27.”

A number of local attractions have also closed or delayed their seasonal opening including Helmsley Walled Garden, the Yorkshire Arboretum, Scampston Walled Garden and Castle Howard.

Nick Howard, said: “In light of the most recent Government guidance regarding COVID-19, we have taken the decision to close the House, Gardens and Grounds, Adventure Playground, Garden Centre, all takeaway food outlets and toilets until further notice.

“We would like to thank you for your understanding and co-operation, we will certainly miss having Castle Howard alive with visitors and will be monitoring the situation and advice and will keep in touch with you all via our digital platforms.

`The Malton Monthly Food Market on Saturday, April 11 is currently going ahead but in a restricted format with only food and drink producers

The layout of the outdoor market will also be planned to ensure a good degree of ‘social distancing’ can be achieved and if necessary, we will restrict the number of people entering the market area at any one time

A spokesperson for Visit Malton, said:”We will continue to monitor the official advice coming from the Government and we will take any further steps necessary to comply with the regulations.”
