A VILLAGE pub has been forced to drop plans to use a marquee to hold events after falling foul of a conservation area.

The owners of the Coachman Inn in Pickering Road West, Snainton, had applied to Scarborough Council to licence the marquee to use for events.

However, at a meeting of Scarborough Council’s licensing sub-committee applicant Wayne Lerigo told the councillors he had no choice but to ditch the plans.

He said: “Since the application went in things have changed. We put the marquee up to give us extra room not knowing it was a conservation area so the marquee is now down and will be sold, it will never go up again.”

He added that he just wanted to run the premises as a country pub selling food and drink.

Eight people had objected to the marquee plans, with four of them turning up to the hearing.

After Mr Lerigo outlined his wish to drop the marquee element of the application and keep the closing time at 1am they withdrew their objections.

Mr Lerigo was instead granted permission to continue to use the outside area for food and drink, with the addition of waiter service added to the licence.

The pub cannot construct a bar or sell drinks from outside, instead, they must come from the bar inside the premises.
